Red onions often have more of a purplish tint to them than just red. These are very delicious and sweet tasting onions. Many people like to cook with red onions because they offer a good flavor but not one that is over powering. They also like the fact that the color of these onions really enhance the overall appearance of your dishes.

Red onions will have a different taste though if you sauté them or you grill them. If the taste of yellow or white onions is just too much for you, then try to use red onions. You will likely find they are more to your liking. Red onions tend to shrink when you cook them so make sure you have much more of it in the raw form than what you want to have once it is cooked. What is great about red onions is that they taste great raw or cooked. They can be served alone or in a variety of different dishes.

In order to get the very best tasting results, you want to shop for the best red onions. You can find them at most grocery stores in the produce section. They are very inexpensive and you can sort through them and pick out the ones you want to use. Carefully look them over to make sure there aren’t blemishes on them. You want to test the firmness of the red onions as well. If you can squeeze it and it feels soft then you want to get a different one.

The good news is that you can buy red onions all year long. They aren’t a seasonal item. You can also store them on the counter or in your refrigerator for several days before you need to use them. If you don’t use all of a red onion you need to seal it up very well or the scent of it can over power the rest of the items on the counter or in your refrigerator. If you have never tasted a red onion by itself, you should pick one up the next time you go grocery shopping.
